— The eighth annual Jazzin’ on Jefferson festival on Detroit’s east side has a decidedly local flavor this year, with Johnnie Bassett & the Blues Insurgents headlining at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 2, and the Planet D Nonet with Thornetta Davis closing at the same time Sunday, July 3. Other performers include Perry Hughes, Gerard Gibbs and Gene Dunlap, Deon Yates and the Vincent Chandler Quintet, among others. There also will be an artist market, a children’s area and community tours of the Jefferson East Business District. — Though Cityfest and Tastefest are things of the past, Detroit’s New Center Park will still offer three days of free music this weekend. Keith Kemp, John Arnold, Electric Fire Babies and more play Saturday, July 2. The Sights, Tour DeTroit and Rogue Satellites top the bill on Sunday, July 3, and Starski & Clutch, Immigrant Suns and Legendary Creatures are part of the Monday, July 4 package. — Metro area rockers Light Lies the Crown tops a local bill that also includes Metaphoria, Steinhart and Panic Synapse on Sunday, July 3, in the Pike Room at the Crofoot, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac.
