Lady Gaga shows both her brassy and her vulnerable sides on “Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden,” which premieres at 9 p.m. Saturday, May 7, on HBO.
While the bulk of the two-hour special captures the lavishly choreographed and staged Monster Ball show, it begins with scenes of a weepy Gaga in front of the mirror in her dressing room, confessing that, “It’s crazy, but I still sometimes feel like a loser kid in high school. ... I gotta pick myself up and I have to tell myself that I’m a superstar every morning so that I can get through this day and be for my fans what they need for me to be.”
Explaining that “I just get so revved up” before big shows, Gaga also says that, “I’m fighting for every kid that’s like me, that felt like I felt and feels like I still feel.” She then prays before having her makeup applied for the performance.
Gaga subsequently told Ellen DeGeneres that she was simply “very excited and nervous” by the prospect of performing at the iconic venue in her hometown of New York, where she recently returned to live after several years in Los Angeles.
Besides hits such as “Just Dance,” “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance,” the HBO special also features “Born This Way,” the title track from Gaga’s forthcoming new album, and an extended live version of the new song “You and I.”
“Born This Way” is due out May 23. Gaga recently released a pair of videos for the second single, “Judas.”
