After spending the summer in amphitheaters as part of the Family Values Tour, deftones have downsized to clubs — and are perfectly happy to do so according to drummer Abe Cunningham.

“We come from the clubs,” says Cunningham, 33, who co-founded the headbanging troupe in 1989 in Sacramento, Calif. “We’ve been fortunate enough to play in all different types of venues and go back and forth, but the clubs, the really grimy and sweaty places, that’s where we come from and that’s the most comfortable place for us, really.”

deftones’ current run is giving the quintet a chance to really tuck into its fifth and latest album, “Saturday Night Wrist,” which came out on Halloween and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. It’s an album that took the band more than two years and several producers to make — the bulk of which was done with noted rock veteran Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd). Cunningham himself calls it “the most ridiculous, crazy time,” and says he “never thought it would be complete.”

But now that it’s out, the drummer says he and his bandmates are starting to feel like it was worth the effort.

“It really felt like an eternity, man,” Cunningham notes. “Most of the record was done a year and a half into that (recording) period and to have to sit on the songs and listen to them without being completed drove us crazy.

“But now it’s done and it’s all good. The reception has been really favorable. People are digging it. To have it out — finally — and to have people enjoying it is such a beautiful thing.”
