The Mackinac Island Music Festival folks who last year brought a live re-creation of The Band’s “The Last Waltz” to town are taking on another iconic music event this year.
Singer-songwriter Mary McGuire Slevin has organized a presentation of the “Festival Express Tour,” a 1970 show that traveled through Canada, by train, with a corps that included the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Traffic, Buddy Guy, Sha Na Na, the Flying Burrito Brothers and others. They won’t be at Ferndale’s Magic Bag on Saturday, of course, but their music will be performed by the likes of the Forbes Brothers, Jill Jack, Barbara Payton, Billy Brandt, Audra Kubat, Sarana VerLin, George Friend, Gary Rasmussen, JC Whitelaw, Charlie Springer and Nino Dmytryszyn.
The show will be presented in two sets, with the second dominated by collaborative performances between the musicians. Doors open at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Tickets are $10, with proceeds going to Great Turtle Festivals, which produces the Mackinac Music Festival.
