After Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz underwent emergency back surgery in 2007, he couldn’t do much. But he did manage to record a batch of songs that became “The Hymn of a Broken Man,” the first album by his new side project Times of Grace.
“It was the music keeping my brain focused on something I love doing and that’s so much a part of my life,” says Dutkiewicz, 33, who acknowledges that while on bed rest for two months he was “having negative thoughts of how I might not be able to tour in Killswitch ... maybe for the rest of my career. It was pretty dark.
“Music’s gotten me through a lot of weird things in my life. It’s always been that supportive crutch. So I wrote this whole record in my head from the hospital bed and then got serious about it when I could play again.”
Wanting to “separate from Killswitch,” Dutkiewicz nevertheless thrilled the heavy metal band’s long-term fans by recruiting original singer Jesse Leach to be the voice of Times of Grace, bringing the two together creatively for the first time since Leach left the band in 2002.
“To be honest with you, he was kind of an afterthought,” Dutkiewicz notes. “It was just me kind of making a record on my own, but I’m not really the best of lyric writers or the greatest singer, so I figured I’d better get somebody to help me out.
“Jesse and I always had that friendship bond. We could talk about dark times, serious stuff, funny stuff ... whatever. He was just being a good friend to help me out. He was the right guy for the job.”
