With a new album unlikely until late 2007 or 2008, it’ll be awhile before Slipknot fans — a.k.a., The Maggots — get to see the rubber-masked headbangers in the fl esh. Instead they can catch them on celluloid, as the group will hold special screenings on Tuesday to celebrate the release of the new DVD “Voliminal — Inside the Nine,” which comes out the same day.
The big-screen showing certainly pleases percussionist M. Shawn Crahan (a.k.a. The Clown), who directed the 90-minute, stream-of consciousness documentary that’s the centerpiece of the two-disc set.
“I don’t really like that term; I’m calling it more of a movie than I am a DVD,” explains Crahan, who also supervised the live footage and other elements of the package.
“You’re talking 3 1/2 years in the making. There were over 300 videotapes at 60 minutes apiece to analyze, and I watched every single one of them. There’s, like, 325 edits in the thing, and each one of them are precisely put in for an exact reason.
“So at the end of that, I didn’t turn in a DVD, y’know? I turned in a movie, period. A film.”
Detroit area Maggots, and other interested parties, can catch “Voliminal” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Emagine Canton, 39535 Ford Road. Tickets are $10. Call (734) 721-3456 or visit www.myspace.com/slipknot1.
