LCD Soundsystem fans can breathe easy.
Though frontman James Murphy has made noise about the new “This is Happening,” which debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart in May, being the end of the band, drummer Pat Mahoney says rumors of LCD’s demise are actually greatly exaggerated.
“There’ll certainly be more LCD music,” says Mahoney, 37. “I think the idea is that with the band itself, among ourselves, this is probably the last kind of full-scale touring we’ll ever do. It doesn’t really make sense with the state of the record industry, and it doesn’t make sense for what it takes out of our hides.
“But we’ll definitely continue to make music. I just think it’s time to retire the band as a professional touring outfit.”
And, Mahoney adds, the New York-based LCD collective is already looking forward to having more options without the live performance commitments.
“We all have a lot of ideas,” he notes. “We want to make videos. I know James wants to make some dance 12-inches, which we haven’t done in awhile.
“And we want to continue to perform, but kind of on our own terms and not necessarily as a big, touring machine. We’ve talked about doing some kind of special events, just not on the scale where we’re doing night after night after night in different cities. So I think there’s a lot to look forward to.”
