Say Anything Starting To Talk, And Play, Like A Band

After numerous lineup changes, fans of California “emo” rockers Say Anything mostly know the group for its bipolar frontman and songwriter Max Bemis and, to a lesser extent, mainstay drummer

Coby Linder.

But the current six-piece lineup has been together since early this year, and guitarist Jake Turner says Say Anything has gradually taken on the personality of a band.

“Max is Say Anything when it comes down to it; he’s our Brian Wilson,” says Turner, 22, who joined the group 15 months ago. His twin brother, fellow guitarist Jeff, came on board in January. “But I feel that over the past year this has become a band people want to see live, and they know who the other guys are.

“Even the people who work for us, they’re like, ‘Finally, Say Anything has become a band. It’s not like Dashboard Confessional, where there’s Chris (Cabrerra) and then there’s the band and no one knows their names.”

That may be the case, but it remains to be seen whether Say Anything’s next album — the follow-up to 2004’s critically lauded “... Is a Real Boy” — will truly be a full-band effort. Turner says the sextet has been demoing Bemis’ new songs on the tour bus with plans to start recording in earnest early next year. But the frontman has voiced a desire to record most, if not all, of the guitar parts himself.

Still, Turner notes, Bemis “wants to include all of us on this CD, as well. He wants our names included, no matter if we just play a guitar part here and there or (sing) some harmonies. I understand, it’s a leader of the band kind of deal.

“But I feel like this new album of ours is gonna be really, really well-written. Max is feeling super, like, awesome about every song. If he’s feeling good about it, then I’m feeling good about it.”

Say Anything, Piebald and Mewithoutyou perform Friday (November 17th) at the Majestic Theater, 4140 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $12.50. Call (313) 833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit. com.
