Swedish dance-pop singer Robyn has an ambivalent relationship with touring.
“I’ve always loved it,” she says — but quickly adds that it also has its shortcomings.
“It’s always for such long periods, without being able to make new music,” explains Robyn (né Carlsson), 31, who started her career on Swedish TV at the age of 12 and began recording in 1995, with a pair of Top 10 hits — “Do You Know (What It Takes)” and “Show Me Love” — on these shores the following year.
“Touring for three years, two years at a time and not being able to go into the studio as much as I would have liked to was hard. I wanted to make new music more frequently.”
She’s found a way to do that now. Last month Robyn released “Body Talk Pt. 1,” the first of three planned albums that she’d ideally like to release during this calendar year. Its successor is already slated for September release, while the third installment is also in her crosshairs.
“It’s a practical solution to the problem of me feeling like my creative process was always depending on a calendar that I didn’t really set for myself,” Robyn explains. “Now I’m going to be listening to my heart and doing what I want to do. I’m going to just keep writing and hopefully be able to release stuff more frequently than before — maybe four songs, maybe 10.
“It makes it fun and it takes the pressure off to conform to something you might not always have inside you. It’s really exciting and very liberating.”
Robyn performs Saturday, July 17, at the Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $16 in advance, $20 at the door. Call 248-858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
