Tower of Power, the Yellowjackets and Jason D. Williams are among the just-announced additions to the 31st Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival lineup.
Tower of Power, led by Detroit-born saxophonist Emilio Castillo and also including native Tom Politzer, will close the Labor Day weekend festival's opening night on Sept. 3, following Take 6 and the Mulgrew Miller Trio.
Memphis-born Williams will bring his Jerry Lee Lewis-styled, piano-pounding antics to the event, while the Yellowjackets' brand of electric jazz fusion will be eminently familiar to most festival attendees. Houston's James Fortune and FIYA will headline the Come MONday gospel showcase on Sept. 6, joining choirs from Detroit's Second Ebenezer Baptist and Triumph churches.
Also joining the festival bill is Detroit-raised saxophonist Salim Washington, who plays with a variety of outfits as well as his own group, the Harlem Arts Ensemble.
A full festival artist roster and other information is available at www.detroitjazzfest.com. More Detroit-based performers are scheduled to be announced in mid-June.
