The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer, Chad Smith, took advantage of a night off to do some more playing Saturday night in Birmingham. After performing with his band on Friday at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Smith showed up at a packed Dick O’Dow’s to spend more than an hour jamming with a local group, 851 Lbs. of Jam, whose members — including singer Brad Kahn, guitarist Barry Kahn and bassist Russ Epker — are old friends. Smith joined the group for Robert Johnson and Jimi Hendrix songs, as well as some improvised originals. “It was a great time,” says Brad Kahn. “Chad’s always been like another brother to me. I grew up with his drums in my family room.”
