He has credits that date back to 1993 and membership in groups such as Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. But it’s taken turntablist Cut Chemist until now to release his own set of new material, “The Audience’s Listening.”
“I wanted to do something I’ve never done before,” says Chemist, 34, whose real name is Lucas Macfadden. After previous albums of remixes, he says that he “wanted to explore new sounds and textures.”
“I’m pretty happy with the way it came out. It’s more jagged and aggressive, maybe not so smooth, and I like that.”
Chemist’s solo ambitions led to his departure from Jurassic 5, though he’s still doing production, turntable and remix work for other artists. “The Audience’s Listening,” meanwhile, is getting a bump thanks to the latest iPod commercial, a neonsoaked dance spot set to the album’s closing track, “The Audience is Listening Theme Song.”
“I’ve heard so many different stories; apparently the guy that made the visual for (the ad) said he wanted my song in there — that was the last rumor I heard,” Chemist says with a laugh. “There’s no way to tie the campaign to my song; it’s just kind of the music for it, you know?
“It’s the first song I play at my shows, so I’m not sure if people are just happy that the beat kicks in or if they really recognize the song. I’m not really out there checking to see.”
Cut Chemist, Lyrics Born and Edan perform Sunday (November 5th) at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call (313) 833-9700 or visit
