Greensky Bluegrass is playing at a CD release party in Ferndale this weekend — but for a very different kind of CD.
The rootsy quintet from Kalamazoo is rolling out “All Access Vol. 1,” a live set from a Nov. 27, 2009 show in Three Rivers. The two-disc set launches what the group hopes will be a continuing series of live recordings documenting its original material as well as quirky cover choices — in this case including Pink Floyd’s “Time”/“Breath (Reprise)” and Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece.”
“This is something we’ve been wanting to do for years,” says mandolin player Paul Hoffman, who co-founded the band in 2000. “The technology and getting a good recording before has been tough, but we’re in a position to do it now.
“We’re talking about racking up another one this spring sometime, or early this summer. Having one coming out really helps, so we’re getting on the ball to get another one going.”
Meanwhile, Hoffman and company are also starting to think about their next studio album, a follow-up to 2008’s “Five Interstates.”
“We’ve been talking about it,” Hoffman reports. “We’re slating out the time, trying to figure out where we’re going to do it. We’ve been slower to get into it this time ’cause it seems like we have so many more options. So we’ve been getting out and meeting a bunch of different engineers and making sure we can take advantage of all those options that are presented to us.
“Maybe this fall we’ll get to it. The thing is, we’ve got to call off shows for a while and start saying ‘no’ and get a window of time to get it all done. But we love to play, so it’s hard to turn anything down.”
