Interview:
John Oates Finds New Solo Path

fans want to hear new songs from Daryl Hall or John Oates these days, they’ll likely have to see them separately.

“Our history is our future,” says Oates, 60, who’s working on a pair of solo albums — one blues and one folk — to follow 2008’s “1000 Miles of Life.” “We have so much amazing music and so many amazing experiences we can pull from and utilize, I think that’s what we’re going to do now (rather than) new music.”

The duo does continue to tour together, and Oates says he and Hall are gearing up for this year’s 25th anniversary of their performance at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem with former Temptations David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks, which became a live album and TV special. “We want to put out a special DVD with enhanced features and extra stuff,” Oates notes. “That’s the sort of thing I think is better for us to be doing now.”

If syndicated TV cooking host Rachael Ray has her way, however, the duo will have one more thing to do — induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which she began championing after learning last fall that Hall & Oates are not yet in the shrine.

“We did that without telling us or warning us,” Oates says with a laugh. “In the middle of the interview, she starts ranting and raving about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and how we should be in it and started this whole movement. We literally were like, ‘Whoa ... ’ She’s, like, the ultimate culinary cheerleader.

“It’s very nice. I don’t know if it will work, but it’s nice to feel like people are on your side, you know?”

John Oates performs at 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, at the Ark, 316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $35. Call 734-761-1451 or visit www.theark.org.
