Jay-Z Tour is Singer's Time To Shine

It’s Jay-Z’s show, but Bridget Kelly has big shoes to fill in her time onstage.

The New York singer, who joined the rap icon’s Roc Nation label last year after studying at the New School University in Manhattan, is the featured vocalist on his hit “Empire State of Mind,” performing Alicia Keys’ parts on the recording.

“It’s a great moment,” says Kelly, 23, who also sings the chorus of “Heart of the City” during the show. “I try to do anything I can vocally to spice it up a little bit and add my own flavor.

“Obviously, you can’t stray too far from the fact it’s still Jay’s song, so I’m not trying to steal the show. But it’s still an incredible experience. I’m on cloud nine out here.”

Kelly is working on her debut album, which she hopes will be out later this year. She’s collaborating with a variety of producers and writers, including hitmaker Linda Perry, but she also views her road hours with Jay-Z as part of her preparation — and doesn’t mind when his wife, Beyoncé, drops in on the tour for visit.

“It’s always great to see her,” Kelly notes. “She’s incredibly sweet and gracious and is such a great artist, too. And it’s nice for me any time she comes around ’cause I’m surrounded by Roc boys all the time. So it’s nice to have her around.”

Bridget Kelly performs with Jay-Z as part of the “BP3 Tour” at 7 p.m. Sunday (March 14) at the Palace, Lapeer Road at I-75, Auburn Hills. Tickets are $39.50-99.50. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
