Name: The Bugs Beddow Band
Formed: 1982 in Oak Park
Sound: Rhythm & Blues
Members: Bugs Beddow, trombone and vocals (West Bloomfield); Robert Reeves, saxophone (Waterford); Bing Burris, guitar and vocals (Redford); Michele Hobbs, bass and vocals (Grand Ledge); Tim Freeman, drums and vocals (Flint).
Influences: Tower of Power, Rufus, the Meters, Earth, Wind & Fire, Wayne Henderson (of the Jazz Crusaders), Curtis Fuller.
Starting Over: The current edition of the Bugs Beddow Band has been together only since July, after he cleaned house in search of “a little more R&B and horn-driven type of sound. I wanted to have it all danceable stuff. I didn’t really want to have too many long solos or sound too jazzy. I wanted to be more true to R&B and good dance music. In order to do that I had to change my rhythm section. It was time to make a move. Now I have what I call my supergroup, people that I have been wanting to play with for a long time.”
School Days: Beddow, who was born in Detroit and graduated from Groves High School in Beverly Hills, studied music at Northern Michigan University and has taught throughout his career. He’s currently the band director at Highland Middle School in the Huron Valley School District. “I love working with kids. I love sharing music, and with kids I see the bright light going on when they start getting into music, and I like helping them along that journey. And working with those kids keeps me fresh and young — until I walk by a glass window or something and go, ‘Who’s that old guy?’ “
