Singer-songwriter Keb’ Mo’ says he has about 20 new songs “sitting around,” 16 of which are “recorded and ready to go” for his next studio album. So he had more than enough material to mix four of the fresh tracks with concert recordings on his new “Live & Mo’ ” album.
“I don’t like to revisit my past too much,” says South Los Angeles native Mo’, 58, (real name Kevin Moore). “I really like fresh albums of fresh new material. But I hadn’t put out a record for awhile and I had these live cuts, but I wanted some new things to play, too.
“In this case I think it works. The (new songs) freshen it up in a way, so it’s not a completely rehashed record of stuff you’ve already heard before. It’s probably the last time I’ll do something like that, but in the meantime I think it works well.”
Mo’ says the idea for a live album appealed to him more because “Live & Mo’ ” also is the first release on his new independent label, Yolabelle International. It was, he notes, a project that “I didn’t have to fund real heavily” and would allow him to raise some operating capital while he established the imprint.
“I have to pay for the record myself now ... and then figure out a way to get your money back so you can make the next record,” Mo’ explains. “I don’t know if I’ll stay independent or what kind of partnership I might do. This one is a way to kind of test the water and see what kind of marketing I can do as a record company and also give the public a few new things. We’ll see how it goes from there.”
Keb’ Mo’ performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 11) at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $26, $36 and $50. Call (734) 668-8463 or visit www.michtheater.org.
