Formed: 1992 in Harper Woods, as Rubber Soul. The Dead Again name was adopted in 2008.
Sound: Grateful Dead tribute band
Members: Brian Avigne — lead guitar and vocals (Clinton Township); Brian Sheehan — guitar and vocals (Grosse Pointe Park); James DeCarlo — bass (Grosse Pointe Park); Francis Jaramillo — keyboards (Detroit); Christopher McIntosh — drums (Harper Woods); Peter Avigne — drums (Austin, Texas); Krista Smith — vocals (Fraser).
Influences: Take a wild guess ...
Day Jobs: Brian Avigne is a union electrical contractor while his brother Peter works in the human resources management department for Travis County. McIntosh is the human resources director for the Hollingsworth Logistics Group in Dearborn. Sheehan, DeCarlo and Jaramillo are full-time musicians, and Smith is a professional photographer.
Dawn Of The Dead: Though the group initially took the Rubber Soul name from a Beatles album, Brian Avigne says the Grateful Dead’s music was far more intriguing. “Two-minute songs aren’t that fun to play. We really started doing Dead covers because all our friends were into it and we just really like playing them. I always liked playing that more than my own music, and I think other people, people who were listening to us, felt the same way.”
Living The Dead: “We just want it to sound authentic. We want our songs to sound as much like the Dead as we can get ’em ... going through and getting the parts, ‘Does my equipment sound like this?’ The best scenario to me is if somebody in the crowd can close their eyes and say, at least for one second, ‘I was brought back to when I saw them.’ ”
Being Jerry: Avigne’s role in Dead Again is playing the late Jerry Garcia’s parts, which he says is continuously challenging. “Basically, he’s a culmination of every kind of American music there is — from folk to country to bluegrass to rock. When I started listening to the Dead, I realized it was a mainstream band playing all these different kinds of music, and for a guitar player, it covered all the bases for me. He just had the whole package as a guitar player.”
Hear ’em: Dead Again has not yet released a CD or recordings of its performances.
