Homegrown Happenings: Detroit Blues Challenge Finals and more...

The music and the competition will get hot ’n’ heavy when The Detroit Blues Society presents the 7th annual Detroit Blues Challenge Finals on Sunday (Oct. 18) at Callahan’s Music Hall, 2105 South Blvd., Auburn Hills. Artists such as Carl Henry, John Latini, the Broken Arrow Blues Band, Josh Boys & the VIP Band, the Crossroad Blues Band and the Christopher Leigh Band will compete for a trip to Memphis, Tenn., and the national Blues Challenge finals. Singer-songwriters Stewart Francke, Josh White Jr. and Matt Watroba will join Floyd King & the Bushwackers in a benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at 8 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 17) at MAMA’s Coffeehouse inside the Birmingham Unitarian Church, 38651 N. Five local bands — Urban Nomads, Hit-N-Run, Blues Syndicate, Six Gun and KORODON — will perform at a Rocktoberfest party from noon to midnight on Saturday (Oct. 17) at the Pontiac Eagles club, 289 W. Montcalm. The event is part of the Eagles chapter’s celebration of 104 years of community service. Admission is $3 for members and $5 for nonmembers with proceeds going to Fraternity of Eagles charities. Call (248) 739-1036 for more information.

The much-loved local duo of Sheila Landis and Rick Matle will present “Stars and Other Heavenly Bodies” at this month’s edition of B’Jazz Vespers, 6 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 18) a the First Baptist Church, 300 Willits St. at Bates, Birmingham.
