Name: Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor
Formed: As SikSik Nation during 2005 in Ann Arbor and surrounding environs.
Sound: Lo-fi, ambient garage rock.
Members: Sean Morrow, vocals and guitar (Livonia); Eric Oppitz, bass and vocals (Ann Arbor); Rick Sawoszinski, drums (Ypsilanti); Wayne Woodward, lights, visuals and tech (Ypsilanti).
Influences: Morrow says SOYSV’s sound comes “from a whole barrage of perspectives,” including David Bowie, T. Rex, the Black Angels, Joy Division, Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Doors and the Velvet Underground, among others.
Day Jobs: Morrow teaches at the Cherry Hill School of Performing Arts in Inkster; Sawoszinski works in tech support for the University of Michigan; Woodward is a telephone system tech; and Oppitz is a full-time musician.
What’s In A Name: After the sound of the band changed when drummer Sawoszinski joined, Morrow says he and Oppitz felt they wanted to adopt a new moniker that “had more of a connection to what we were writing. There’s no deep, embedded meaning behind (Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor); we’re kind of like a psychedelic glam-rock band, so we wanted something to fit that mold. But (the name) doesn’t come from anywhere. It’s just something we came up with.”
Walking On Sunshine: Though the trio has become “more experimental,” Morrow
is quick to note that “fundamentally, we still write songs. We look to have melody and a hook within what we write, but we’re trying to push our limitations as far as we can go. The stuff we’ve been playing out for the past six to eight months is just kind of an evolution on what we started, which was a more gritty, thicker sound.”
