New Album Helps Crenshaw Make Up For Lost Time

Marshall Crenshaw was as surprised as any of his fans that six years had passed between albums.

“Time just really flies anymore,” says the Berkley-raised Crenshaw, 55, who released the new “Jaggedland” in June. “The years just kind of race by. I find that to be true as I get older.”

“I still love to make records,” he adds. “The songwriting (for ‘Jaggedland’) was a really slow process. In the beginning it was really slow; towards the end, I got on a roll. I was really committed to just wanting to do the very best I could. I had to sort of feel my way along until I had a sense of direction about it, and that took awhile.”

Crenshaw started working on “Jaggedland” at home in upstate New York in 2007, then did the bulk of the recording during 2008 in Los Angeles. The latter also allowed him to fulfill a longtime wish — to get former MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer on one of his albums, this time playing on the track “Stormy River.”

“I’ve known him for a long time, and we’re really comfortable together,” Crenshaw says. “I tried to get Wayne to play on my first album (in 1982), actually. So I go back a long way with him, and I finally got him to play on one of my records. And he’s just a great player; he creates a lot of excitement whenever he plays.”

Marshall Crenshaw and Nick Lucassian perform Sunday (Sept. 27) at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18. Call (248) 544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
