Hard rockers Mudvayne have played on their share of festival bills during the past 13 years, including OZZFest and Metallica’s “Summer Sanitarium” tour in 2003.
This year, however, the quartet put together its own “Pedal to the Metal” tour, which frontman
refers to as “a Cl micro festival” that he considers more palatable than other kinds of summer packages.
“People love summer festivals, I get it — as miserable as they can be,” says Gray, 37, who co-founded Mudvayne 1996 in Peoria, Ill. “I’ve been a spectator at festivals for years and years, since Lollapalooza years ago. It’s hot. It’s outside, so if there’s wind, it blows the sound around. You’re there all day, so there’s no way to avoid really high-priced concessions and things like that.
“This kind of condenses it a bit, I hope, makes it a little more comfortable. It’s a little more intimate, but it does have that kind of (festival) vibe, for sure.”
“Pedal to the Metal” is also Mudvayne’s last lap for its latest album, “The New Game,” which came out last November. Gray says the group already has its next album recorded, though it’s waiting for a release date before coming up with a title, artwork and other finishing details.
“It’s Mudvayne,” Gray says of the album. “I think on one level, it’s a natural progression of where we’ve been going. On another level, it’s a little retrofitted, kinda leaning back towards some of the earlier stuff — odd time signatures, weird rhythms and melodies and stuff like that.
“There’s definitely the more newsounding Mudvayne songs, but there are also more old-school sounding Mudvayne songs, too. It’s pretty cool.”
Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett, meanwhile, also plan to record a second album with their all-star side group Hellyeah some time later this year or in early 2010.
Mudvayne and others perform at 6 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 12) at the Freedom Hill Amphitheatre, 14900 Metropolitan Pkwy. at Schoenherr, Sterling Heights. Tickets are $27 pavilion, $17 lawn. Call (586) 268-5100 or visit www.freedomhill.net.
