Shanell “aka SNL” Woodgett is “the rookie” in Lil Wayne’s Young Money camp. But she’s certainly its Rookie of the Year.
The Massachusetts-born singer, songwriter and dancer co-wrote “Prom Queen,” the first single from Lil Wayne’s forthcoming album “The Rebirth,” and is collaborating on several other tracks for it. And she’s making waves with her own “Play in My Band,” which she’s performing during Lil Wayne’s set on this summer’s “America’s Most Wanted Music Festival” tour and is slated to appear on a Young Money compilation due out in the fall.
Her own debut album, however, remains on the Young Money runway for the time being.
“We’re just trying to get Young Money’s album and ‘Rebirth’ out, then I’m gonna slide in there next,” explains Shanell, 25, whose sister is former Danity Kane member D Woods. “We’re just letting time kind of develop it, which is fine with me ’cause I’m a very creative person. I don’t like to rush anything.”
But Shanell, who was discovered by Lil Wayne while dancing for fellow artist Ne-Yo, feels like she’s found a good fit being part of Young Money collective.
“There’s a freedom of creation there,” she says. “Everybody’s a writer. Everybody is a real artist. Nobody’s over here faking anything. It’s a real family situation, and we all understand what the goal is. We’re not competing with each other; we’re coming together to do something bigger than my album, your album and all that.”
The “Young Money Presents: America’s Most Wanted Music Festival” tour, featuring Lil Wayne (with Shanell, Baby aka Birdman and others), Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Pleasure P and Jeremih, takes place at 6 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 30) at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are $42.75-82.75 pavilion, $32.75 lawn. Call (248) 377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
