Woodstock Movie Is Too Close For Festival Creator

Watching Ang Lee’s new film, “Taking Woodstock,” was certainly a trip for Woodstock Music & Arts Festival producer Michael Lang.

“I couldn’t get enough distance on it,” says Lang, 64, who’s portrayed in the film by Jonathan Groff. “I thought I’d be able to remove myself and watch it as a movie. That didn’t work.”

Nevertheless, Lang — who published his own memoir, “The Road to Woodstock,” this summer — says, “I thought there were some great performances in it, and it certainly captures the times really well. Watching all those people travel down the road and approaching the (festival) site, I really got the feeling of being in the middle of it again ... And Jonathan Groff, who plays my character, did a good job.”

“Taking Woodstock” opens Friday (Aug. 28). Check listings for theaters and showtimes.
