Formed: Winter 2008

Sound: Bob Seger tribute band

Members: Lonnie Fletcher, vocals and acoustic guitar (Oxford); Todd Stoney, drums (Commerce Township); Kirk Nelson, guitar and vocals, (White Lake Township); Cliff Barrer, bass and vocals (Berkley); Dan Warren, keyboards and vocals (White Lake Township); Eric Kot (Davison), saxophone and vocals; Suzi Marsh-Hatty, backing vocals (Sterling Heights).

Influences: Heavy music ...

Day jobs: Stoney owns Ramp Boss USA, a vehicle display ramp system for car dealers. Nelson is an engineer with an automotive parts supplier in Farmington. Warren and Barrer are freelance musicians. Marsh-Hatty is a professional vocal coach.

Why Seger? Stoney put Looking Back together out of “economic necessity” after unsuccessfully auditioning for another local tribute band, Echoes of Pink Floyd. He says there’s a niche now for a Seger tribute band. “Southeastern Michigan is the birthplace of Bob Seger, and there’s not been a really good Seger tribute here,” the drummer explains. “A lot of the Seger tributes try to cop his image and get a guy who looks like him and sounds like him, and it’s never close enough, so they fail. We’re trying something different and really focusing on delivering the music right and not getting hung up on the image or how much our singer actually looks like Bob or anything like that.”

Being Seger: Fletcher acknowledges that he has “some big shoes to fill” in fronting Looking Back, but also says the idea is to capture the essence of the music rather than simply copying the act. “It’s more about paying homage to his career and his music,” Fletcher says. “But I do try to emulate (Seger) as much as possible. His voice is very distinctive; he’s got that ‘sore throat’ sound and growl to it. He’s got a powerful voice and a really big range. I wasn’t a really big Bob Seger fan prior to this, but I’ve become one just from listening to the songs and picking them apart.”
