Evan Dando’s goals for “Varshons,” the latest Lemonheads album, were fairly modest.
“We aren’t reaching for no stars here,” Dando, 42, explains. “We weren’t reaching to redeem anything — just confuse people a little more or give ’em a laugh and turn ’em on to some good music.”
“Varshons” is an idiosyncratic set that finds Dando and company covering songs by Gram Parsons, Wire, G.G. Allin, Townes Van Zant and even Christina Aguilera (“Beautiful”). It features guest vocals by Dando’s pal Liv Tyler on Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” and Kate Moss on Arling & Cameron’s “Dirty Robot.”
“I just didn’t have enough songs for a whole new record,” says Dando, who’s suing General Motors for using his 1992 hit “It’s A Shame About Ray” in a 2008 TV ad without his permission. “I was just thinking, ‘What can we do immediately, and, of course, covers came to mind so we went for it.”
Dando does, however, hope to start recording an album of new Lemonheads material this fall for release in early 2010.
