Detroit Native Does Sinatra For Rat Pack Show

Of the Oakland Press

David DeCosta, who’s one of three singers portraying Frank Sinatra in “The Rat Pack is Back,” learned his moves while growing up in Dearborn.

“I come from a musical family, mostly musicians coming out of Michigan, the Detroit area,” says DeCosta, 34, whose parents still reside in Dearborn. “There was always Sinatra on in my house — my dad listening to his music and my mom listening to him and watching his movies. My brothers grew up playing that style of music as well, so I was always around it.”

DeCosta, who now lives in the revue’s home base of Las Vegas, started singing Sinatra tunes in Chicago, when his father’s band had a residency there. They key to doing a good Sinatra, he says, is all about technique.

“I’ve seen a lot of different Frank impersonators,” DeCosta says, “and some of them tend to overplay the Jersey accent and basically portray him like he’s a wise guy. But, y’know, Frank spoke very eloquently. His diction was perfect, and he had a really special phrasing. He sang behind the beat and mastered an art of circular breathing, which is practically impossible.

“And, of course, you need to have a voice — and when I say a voice, you need to have some power behind you, because (Sinatra) had that, too.”

“The Rat Pack is Back!” plays at 6 p.m. Sunday (May 17) at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on the campus of Oakland University, Rochester Hills. Tickets are $25 pavilion, $15 lawn. Call (248) 377-0100 or visit www. palacenet.com.
