Homegrown Happenings: Lyman Woodard Tribute, Blowout and more...

Friends and colleagues of the late Detroit jazz artist and onetime Motown session musician Lyman Woodard, who passed away Feb. 24 in Owosso, will gather for a tribute Monday night (March 9) at Cliff Bell’s, 2020 Park Ave., Detroit. Among those taking part will be drummers Leonard King and RJ Spangler, who organized the event, as well as Denny Coffey, Ron English, Renell Gonsalvez, the Sun Messengers, Dwight Adams, Robert Tye, Johnny Evans of the Howling Diablos, Gerard Gibbs, Chris Codish and others. John Sinclair, Woodard’s college roommate, will serve as emcee and recite a special poem. The show starts at 9 p.m. Admission is free. Call (313) 961-2543 or visit www.cliffbells.com.

The 12th annual Hamtrack Blowout continues Friday and Saturday (March 6-7) with scores of local acts playing at 15 venues around town. Among the weekend highlights are: Detroit Techno Militia spinning tonight at Detroit Threads, 10238 Jos Campau; John Sinclair with Pinkeye on Saturday at Paycheck’s, 2932 Caniff; singersongwriters Jo Serrapere and Willie Dunns Saturday night at Whiskey in the Jar, 2741 Yemans; a daytime Family Hootenanny at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cafe 1923, 2287 Holbrook; and the unveiling of the art installation “Stupor! A Retrospective of Bad Ideas” at 8 p.m. Saturday at Design 99, 3309 Caniff. Weekend wristbands are available for $20 via www.ticketweb. com, or at Knights of Columbus Hall, 9632 Conant. Gilda’s Club of Metro Detroit will be the beneficiary of Jazz on the Vine, a fundraiser Friday (March 6, featuring music by 17-piece big band DSO with vocalist Kimmie Horne. The evening also includes wine, beer and food tastings as well as a silent auction. Admission runs from $60 per person for general admission to a $1,200 Premier package for eight. The Pike Room in Pontiac hosts a special New Band Night on Sunday (March 8) to showcase up-and-coming Michigan groups — including A Letter to You, the Weatha Report, Audio Summer, Past the Pacific and the Summer Highlight.
