The Hamtramck Blowout, annually Detroit’s biggest weekend of rock music, turns 12 this year with another four days and 200 acts running Wednesday through Saturday (March 4-7).
Things kick off in Detroit, however, with a pre-party at the Majestic Theatre Complex, 4140 Woodward Ave., that will feature the Meatmen, Outrageous Cherry, The Wrong Numbers and Fluent performing at the Majestic Theatre, along with The Gepetto Files puppet show and a “punk fitness interlude.” Silverghost, the Octopus, Childbite and Electric Fire Babies will play upstairs at the Magic Stick, while Mustache in Your Face will hold forth all night long in the Garden Bowl.
The festival moves to Hamtramck on Thursday for three more nights of music at 15 venues, including performances by groups such as The Silent Years, The Dirtbombs, the Detroit Cobras, Grande Nationals, The Volebeats, The Earworms, Great Lakes Myth Society, Warn Defever’s WAR, Doop & The Inside Outlaws, Battling Siki, Divine Comedians (featuring former members of The Dollfaces) and many more. John Sinclair will join Pinkeye on Saturday at Paycheck’s, 2932 Caniff, while singer-songwriters Jo Serrapere and Willie Dunns will team up the same night at Whiskey in the Jar, 2741 Yemans.
Detroit Threads, 10238 Jos Campau, will feature special dance parties each night, with ’80s music on Thursday, the Detroit Techno Militia spinning on Friday and a Diocile Records party on Saturday. Cafe 1923, 2287 Holbrook, will host a daytime Family Hootenanny at 1 p.m. Saturday, and Design 99, 3309 Caniff, will unveil the art installation “Stupor! A Retrospective of Bad Ideas” at 8 p.m. Saturday.
