Canada's Trews Ready To Make Their Mark In U.S.

The Trews are ready for their “first big push” into America, according to singer-guitarist Colin MacDonald.

The Toronto group released its second album, 2005’s “Den of Thieves,” across the border as well. But “No Time For Later,” which debuted at No. 4 on the Canadian charts nearly a year ago, is slated for an April U.S. release, and MacDonald says the quartet means business.

“We consider this a fresh start,” says MacDonald, the oldest Trews member at 30. “We have some success in Canada and continued that success with this album. We would definitely like to get into the States and do a lot of touring and see if people will latch onto us and like it.

“We’re not afraid of the van. We’re not afraid of the road or to ... get out and work hard. We love what we’re doing. We’ve done it for a long time, and we enjoy the lifestyle. We’ll do what it takes.”

“No Time For Later” features some of the Trews’ most political songs to date, including the single “Paranoid Freak” and “Gun Control.” MacDonald says that’s “part of growing up and seeing more of the world,” but he doesn’t anticipate the Trews taking a hard turn into topical songwriting.

“I’m a big rock ‘n’ roll fan,” he explains. “I like to make people smile. I don’t want them to feel like, ‘Who’s this over-opinionated jackass?’ So I don’t think I’m going to sit there and write a song about everything little thing I see on CNN.

“But every now and then there will be an issue that I feel like I have to weigh in on. And then I don’t mind standing up and being that ‘Who does he think he is?’ guy. But I don’t think I’ll make a habit out of it.”

The Trews perform Thursday (Feb. 10) at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. Call (248) 544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
