Kid Rock Would Rather Play Than Receive

Kid Rock is nominated for two Grammy Awards on Sunday (Feb. 8)night, but winning is not the Clarkstonbased artist’s priority.

“I always look forward to playing,” says Rock (real name Bob Ritchie), who’s up for Best Rock Album for 2007’s double-platinum “Rock N Roll Jesus” and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the hit “All Summer Long,” and will perform during the telecast.

“Getting nominated is nice. It’s a nice accolade. But it’s not about the award to me.”

Rock has started giving his various awards away to friends and supporters. “I’d give every award back if I could have a slot to play,” Rock notes. “If they say, ‘You’re gonna win five awards tonight, I’d say keep ’em all. Just give me a slot on the show to play, ’cause that’s what I like to do.”

Rock and Twisted Brown Trucker performed at the 2008 Grammy Awards as well, collaborating on “That Old Black Magic” with Keely Smith. He also was slated to perform at the MusiCares Person Of The Year Tribute To Neil Diamond on Friday (Feb. 6)in Los Angeles.

After the Grammys, Rock will return to work on his follow-up to “Rock N Roll Jesus.” “I think I can make an equally good record, if not better, than the last one,” Rock says, “which is once again putting quite a weight on our shoulders, but I do like the pressure.”

Rock also will be touring in the spring — though a doublebill with Lynyrd Skynyrd, which is currently up in the air following the death of its keyboardist Billy Powell — and plans a summer road trek as well.
