Interview:
Musicians Band Together For New "Family"

On paper, Fiction Family looks like a collision rather than a collaboration.

Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman comes from the rock world, while Sean Watkins is best known as part of the contemporary bluegrass trio Nickel Creek. But the two San Diego musicians found plenty of common ground when they started writing together in 2004, resulting in the “Fiction Family” debut that’s due out on Jan. 20.

“We’re different genres, but we love the same band and we love the same kinds of songs,” says Watkins, 31. Basically we live 10 minutes away from each other, and I’m a firm believer that musicians who live near each other should be playing together as much as they can. That’s the way you grown and learn.”

Foreman, 32, adds that Fiction Family “works in the end. It’s a really great crosssection of what he does and what I do.”

At this point, Watkins and Foreman are chomping at the bit to have Fiction Family heard by their fans. The 12-song album — which includes “Betrayal,” the first song they wrote together — has been ready for nearly a year, though Watkins says the project’s languid pace is fine by him.

“There was no pressure at all to have it be something other than just some songs we were having fun recording, sort of like a pet project,” Watkins says. “We weren’t even thinking about an album until we had seven, eight songs together.

“With all the other things we were doing in our bands, it was a refreshing way to do something else musically without there being a lot of expectations. The musical chemistry was there, and it was just really easy.”

Fiction Family performs at 8 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 13) at the Ark, 316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $15. Call (734) 761-1451 or visit www.theark.org.
