The Four Tops are using sports to return to active duty this weekend for the first time since the funeral of founding lead singer Levi Stubbs Jr.
The venerable Motown act will sing the national anthem for the Detroit Lions game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 9) at Ford Field, then head up the road to sing it again when the Detroit Pistons’ NBA Eastern Conference Finals rematch with the Boston Celtics at 6 p.m.
Abdul “Duke” Fakir, the sole surviving founding member of the group said in a statement that the Tops want to use the anthem performances “to give thanks for the wonderful support and the outpouring of love shown by our Detroit fans ... It should be a wonderful homecoming.”
Stubbs, who was 72, passed away on Oct. 17; his funeral was held Oct. 27.
