Michigan's own Stooges are up for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet again -- but they're not renting their tuxedos yet.

The group, along with their mates the MC5 from the late '60s Detroit-Ann Arbor rock scene, has been nominated several times before, as recently as last year. They've never been chosen for actual induction, however, and frontman Iggy Pop says that "I wouldn't hold my breath" for the group to ever get in.

"It's like a popularity contest of sorts run by people you don't know (and) you don't particularly like," says Pop, who was born James Osterberg in Ypsilanti and fronted the Stooges for three albums between 1967-74. Guitarist Ron Asheton and drummer Scott Asheton continue to reside in the Ann Arbor area, and the Stooges began working again in 2003 and released a new album, "The Weirdness," in 2007.

"I didn't ask to be nominated," Pop continues."They decide to nominate you and then vote for you or not. It's disappointing if you don't get in, and I suppose you get other problems if you do get in -- which old members of the group are gonna show up, and are you gonna feel cheesy about it?

"I would say that if we need to get in, then we're in pretty sorry shape, y'know?"

The nominees for the Rock Hall's 2009 class were announced Monday (Sept. 22) and, in addition to the Stooges, include Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Metallica, Run-D.M.C., War and Bobby Womack. Some 500 music industry professionals vote in the process.

An announcement on the final inductees is expected later this year, and the ceremony takes place April 4 in Cleveland, where the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum.
