Wanted: entertainers for a good gig and a good cause. The audience is large, too -- it's just not watching or listening for very long.
The Brooksie Way, a half marathon and 5K race and walk taking place Oct. 5 in Rochester Hills, is looking for performers to entertain participants and spectators during the event. It follows a trend set by other races around the country, and Brooksie Way race director Deb Kiertzner says entertainment "raises the quality of the raise and really excites the runners and motivates them as they go.
"I can't express how important it is to the quality of the race to have top-notch entertainment out there. It just raises the whole event and everybody involved with it."
Kiertzner is looking for about 10 groups or individuals, "whether it's a garage rock band, a gospel group, a marching band." So far one "act," a group of elementary school children from Rochester, have signed on to provide a thunder-stick orchestra at one of the stations. The performances will be volunteered, but Kiertzner says the Brooksie Way may be able to help allay some transportation costs.
The event was created by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, and proceeds go to county fitness activities such as the Count Your Steps Program.
Those interested in performing at the Brooksie Way should contact course entertainment coordinator Michel [cq] Valkoun at (810) 423-6124 at firstname.lastname@example.org. Information about the event can be found at www.thebrooksieway.com.
