When the hardcore rock troupe Hatebreed decided to make its first live DVD — “Live Dominance,” due out Tuesday — Detroit was an instant choice.
“It’s pretty central location, so our fans — not only from the States, but all over the world — could get there pretty easily,” says guitarist Frank Novinec. But Hatebreed chose to shoot in March at Harpo’s for more than just geographic reasons.
“Detroit’s a rockin’ town — always has been since back in the ’60s and Motown and everything,” says Novinec, 37. “We’ve always had great shows there, and all the bands we know love to play there. So it seemed appropriate that we did (the DVD) there in Detroit Rock City, y’know?”
“Live Dominance” is one of a trio of releases Hatebreed has planned for fans to tide them over until the group’s next studio album.
A live CD, recorded in Dallas and produced by former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, will be out before the end of this year, and early 2009 will bring a covers album featuring material from the catalogs of Hatebreed influences and favorites such as Metallica, Sepultura, The Misfits and Agnostic Front, among others.
“This is just stuff for fans of the band to get into, stuff they don’t normally get,” explains Novinec, who says Hatebreed has just started writing for its next album. “And we wanted to have some stuff out there so people keep us in mind and in the media and stuff, even though we’ll be busy in the studio and probably won’t be on the road much.”
Hatebreed, Soilent Green, War of Ages and others perform Tuesday (Sept. 2) at the I-Rock Nightclub, 16350 Harper Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $17. Call (313) 779-9278 or visit www.harposconcerttheatre.com.
