Hoarse Reunion Highlights Hamtramck Fest

John Speck isn’t shy about why the Detroit rock trio Hoarse is reuniting for Hamtramck’s 26th Labor Day Festival.

“Money,” says the singer, guitarist and songwriter, who fronted Hoarse in the mid-’90s, when he, former Sponge drummer Jimmy Paluzzi and bassist Robby Graham released a couple of singles and a 1997 album, “Happens Twice,” for RCA records.

The festival’s talent organizer, Speck says, called to asked if the group — which performs Saturday — would be interested in playing this year.

“I said, ‘No,’ ” Speck, 34, recalls. “Then he mentioned the money fi gure, and I said, ‘Yes,’ ’cause we’re all broke.”

That said, Speck says it’s “cool” to be doing something with Hoarse again, though he cautions that it’s defi nitely “not anything other than a one-off show for money.”

Rehearsals have gone well, he reports, though the set will be relatively short and concentrate on the group’s bestknown material — the singles “Long Gone” and “Diamond,” as well as “Tuesday Morning,” a track from the album the group planned to also release as a single before RCA cooled to the project.

“Like Jimmy says, ‘All the hits ...’,” Speck notes with a laugh.

After Hoarse broke up in the late ’90s, he and Paluzzi went on to form the Fags, another trio that’s enjoyed national attention and whose fi rst full-length album, “Light ’em Up,” is now available online at iTunes and will hit stores Oct. 31. Speck also plays in another Detroit band, the Skeemin’ NoGoods, which performs tonight at the Festival.
