The heavy metal band Dethklok has become a surreal experience for frontman Brendon Small.
A cartoonist by trade, Small created Dethklok as a fictional entity for the Adult Swim series “Metalocalypse.” Now, however, the “group” has released “Dethalbum” and goes on tour, with Small and his cohorts dressed in black and playing live while images of the cartoon band are shown on a screen.
“It’s all very ironic,” says Small, 33. “It’s really weird. Everything has been sold-out so far. The kids are going insane. We’re out there playing this loud metal ...
“I know I wrote all the music and came up with the show, but I feel like I can’t take any credit. It’s like, it’s not my band; I just play this music, but it’s not about me. But that’s the world of cartoons for you.”
Small is currently shepherding Dethklok through a second season, which will include some longer episodes, and after that he plans to hit the recording studio for the group’s second album. He feels a Dethklok movie could also be in the future.
And for now he says he’s happy staying behind the scenes and simply being the voice of Nathan Explosion, Dethklok’s frontman.
“I just want to make us sound as much like the record as possible and nail it down and have a very strong presence of the band on the screen at the shows,” Small explains. “I get tons of pleasure out of just playing. I don’t need to do anything beyond that. I know who wrote all the stuff. I don’t need the spotlight.”
Dethklok performs with Chimaira and Soilent Green at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (June 17) at Clutch Cargo’s, 65 E. Huron St., Pontiac. Tickets are $25. Call (248) 333-2362 or visit www.livenation.com.
