Homegrown Happenings: School of Rock, Spencer Barefield, B'Jazz Vespers and D12

After performing Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” last weekend, students from the Paul Green School of Rock Music in Rochester return to the Pike Room in Pontiac’s Crofoot with a Tribute to the Beatles show at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (May 17-18). Detroit jazz guitarist Spencer Barefield will lead his group in three special performances this weekend. His Trio, with Don Mayberry on drums and Djallo Djakate on drums, performs at 9:30 p.m. Friday (May 16) in the Jazz Cafe inside the Music Hall Center, 350 Madison Ave., Detroit. Admission is free. The B’Jazz Vespers series concludes its 2007-08 season at 6 p.m. Sunday (May 19) with the international stylings of Rich K. Brazil & Beyond. The quintet, which features three percussionists, performs at the First Baptist Church, 300 Willits St. at Bates, Birmingham. Admission is free but a collection will be taken for the musicians and a nonsectarian worship interlude will take place during intermission. The Detroit rap troupe D12, of which Eminem is a member, celebrates the release of a new mix tape — its first release since the death of group founder Proof in 2006 — on Wednesday (May21) at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. “Mixtape: The Return of the Dozen” features performances by Eminem and Proof, as well as guest appearances by Royce Da 5’9”, King Gordy, Monica Blaire and others.
