DETROIT — Singer-songwriters Jill Jack, Liz Larin and Paul Miles, and the Latin music group Orquesta Sensacional were the top winners at the 17th Annual Detroit Music Awards held Friday night at the Fillmore Detroit.
Other top-name winners included Clarkston rocker Kid Rock, who took home the Outstanding National Major Label Recording for his 2007 album “Rock and Roll Jesus,” and the White Stripes, whose “Icky Thump” was named Outstanding National Single. Rapper Paradime, a member of Kid Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker Band, won the Outstanding National Small/ Independent Label Recording for his album “Spill at Will,” and the late Motown great Marvin Gaye’s “Here My Dear” was named Outstanding Anthology/ Compilation/Reissue.
Jack won three awards in the Acoustic/Folk category, for Artist, Vocalist and Songwriter. Larin was named Outstanding Rock/Pop Artist, Songwriter and Vocalist, while Miles took home trophies for Outstanding Blues/R&B Instrumentalist, Outstanding Blues/R&B Songwriter and Outstanding Blues/R&B Recording for “Steppin’ Out.”
Orquesta Sensacional scored Outstanding World Music Group honors, while bassist Bill Koggenhop was named Outstanding World/Reggae/Ska Instrumentalist and Xavier Rosario was the Outstanding World/Reggae/Ska Songwriter.
Other multiple winners on Friday included Nadir Distorted Soul, Vinnie Dombroski of the Orbitsuns, Billy Brandt, Thornetta Davis, Sonnie Day, T. Money Green, the Muggs, Black Bottom Collective and the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings ensemble.
The Detroit Music Awards are sponsored by the Motor City Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Friday’s show featured performances by American Mars, Crud, Doop & the Inside Outlaws featuring Ty Stone, the Scott Gwinell Jazz Orchestra featuring Jesse Palter and Joan Crawford, Wil Louchi, the Muggs, Nadir Distorted Soul and Luis Resto. MC Serch hosted the evening. Distinguished Achievement Awards were presented to the Roostertail, the Ark’s Dave Siglin and Uncle Jessie White, with local musician Jeff Grand leading an allstar tribute to White.
