Own Music Is Jann Klose's Real Goal

Jann Klose’s musical resume includes studying singing opera in Cleveland and Broadway and touring company stints with the musicals “Jekyll & Hyde” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” But he never lost sight of wanting to do his own music primarily.

“When I first came to New York (in 2000), I was like, ‘OK, I know I can sing, so I just need to get work as a singer and see where that takes me,’” says Klose, 32, a German native who also lived in South Africa and released a pair of independent albums during his time in Cleveland.

“I just went to every audition I could in the city and ended up falling into the musical theater world. It was fun, but I didn’t get the same kind of satisfaction out of it I could get out of writing and doing my own stuff.”

Klose honed in on his recording career again in 2003, with the “Black Box” EP, as well as “Moonlight Interior,” a 2005 album based on an Off-Broadway production that used his work. The new “Reverie,” meanwhile, is less thematically centered.

“I had a lot of songs that had piled up,” Klose says, “and I wanted to really make an album, something that you could listen to from beginning to end in one sitting, that would take you on a journey. So that’s how I approached it.

“But I also approached each song as an individual piece and concentrated on it from that perspective. I wanted each song to be part of the story, a chapter, and at the end put it together and hopefully have there be a thread so they’d all make sense together.”
