Nearly two years after releasing its second album, "Billy Talent II," the Toronto rock quartet Billy Talent is chomping at the bit for album number three.
"We're writing, and the process has been unbelievable," reports bassist Jonathan Gallant. "The ideas and songs we're coming up with are fantastic, so we're pretty excited.
"And we're excited just to keep on writing. We put up a big chart in our little rehearsal studio about what parts we've written, what songs we have done, all that kind of stuff. It's neat to get it filled up. So we're just enjoying that process now.
Gallant, 32, says that he expects Billy Talent -- which won two Juno Awards (Canadian Grammys) in 2007 and released a concert CD/DVD set "666 Live" earlier this year -- to hit the studio this summer, mostly likely in Vancouver and possibly with "II" co-producers Gavin Brown and Ian D'sa involved again, "unless Rick Rubin wants to do it and we have to go to his studio (in Los Angeles)."
Nevertheless, Gallant says Billy Talent is still happy to have one more chance to play the "II" songs again, especially in a situation opening for a big band (My Chemical Romance) whose audience could be converted into fans.
"('II') is a great record, and we're really proud of it," Gallant says. "I think we'll probably squeeze a new song in there somewhere for fun and to hear how it sounds, then play a lot of our harder stuff.
"When we get to open for somebody it's a nice situation. You really want to impress people, so you can go put on a hard set that's real energetic to get their attention."
Billy Talent performs with My Chemical Romance and Drive By at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (April 18 and 19) at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $35 and available for Sunday's show only. Call (313) 961-5450 or visit www.livenation.com.
