Tantric Launches Comeback

Two years ago, Tantric’s time as a band was in jeopardy.

The group’s label, Madonna-owned Maverick Records, was crumbling, taking the group’s still-unreleased third album down with it. And one-by-one, Tantric’s three original instrumentalists — who had been part of Days of the New— left, leaving frontman Hugo Ferreira alone and wondering if he should continue.

“I had a decision to make,” says Ferreira, 34, who lived in the Detroit area, mostly Oakland County, from 1992-2000, where he led the band Merge. “It was either quit and start another project or something, or try to revive (Tantric).

“It was really difficult to do. There were many times I wanted to quit. But something inside of me was like, ‘No, man, it’s not gonna go down like this...’ I wanted to be the one to quit, not have someone else tell me when my time is done. So here I am...”

Ferreira reconfigured the Louisvillebased Tantric with four new members and recorded a new album, “The End Begins,” which is due out April 22. The first single, “Down and Out,” is already getting rock radio airplay, and he’s optimistic about re-establishing the band in the wake of a difficult period.

“I think how we’re really gonna sell this record is effectively nonstop touring and just regaining our touring base,” Ferreira says. “So far it does feel really good. It’s really nice to hear your song on the radio again. That’s just a great feeling. I just thank God for it every day — and hope it stays that way.”

Tantric, Cinder Road and Matt Austin perform Saturday (March 29) at New York, New York, 33151 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield. Admission is free.
