It’s been 30 years since Bookie’s Club 870 opened and brought punk and New Wave to Detroit — including early shows by the Police, Ultravox, the Damned, the Dead Boys and many others. This weekend the anniversary will be celebrated in style, with three nights of Anniversary Reunion shows around the metro area organized by onetime Bookie’s booker Scott Campbell.
Campbell’s band the Sillies will headline all three of the concerts. Friday`s (May 14) bill also features Nikki Corvette, Sarana, Roommates singer Beaux and Konniption Fit at the Ritz, 24300 Hoover Road, Warren. Call (586) 756-6140. The Reunion shows come to Oakland County on Saturday (May 15) when the Sillies, the Modfather, the Dial Tones and others play at the New Way, 23130 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Call (248) 541-9870.
Things head back east for the grand finale on Sunday (March 16), which, in addition to the Sillies’ set, includes a showing of the film “Detroit Rock: ’77-’81,” which features live footage of the MC5, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels and the Romantics, as well as a poster and photo exhibit featuring the works of metro area artists such as Campbell, Niagra, Robert Matheu and Deanne Detroit. The festivities take place at Dylan’s, 15402 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park. Call (313) 884-6030.
Admission to each of the shows is $5. Doors open at 9 tonight and Saturday, 8 p.m. Sunday. More information is available at www.bookiesclub870.com.
