This is the time of year when high school and college students hit the sun or the ski resorts for spring break.

The music industry, however, heads to Austin, Texas.

The annual South By Southwest Music + Media Conference takes place Wednesday through March 16, bringing thousands of acts and industry mavens from around the world to town for five nights — and days — of concerts, showcases, parties and panel discussions. And, as in recent years, SXSW will have a Michigan flavor.

Chief among local groups headed south is the Von Bondies, who will be previewing material from the group’s forthcoming album, “Love, Hate and Then There’s You,” due out in the fall. The group will play four shows at SXSW, including three parties and an official showcase.

The Von Bondies are hardly alone, however. Other Detroit area groups making the SXSW scene include the Hard Lessons, Juiceboxxx, Child Bite, the High Strung, the Deadstring Brothers, the Singles, rapper Guilty Simpson, and Chiodos from Davison, near Flint. Was (Not Was), which was formed in Detroit and is now based in Los Angeles, will be previewing its April release, “Boo!”

Ann Arbor, meanwhile, is sending Taproot, the Great Lakes Myth Society, Tally Hall, the Bloids, Frontier Ruckus, Canada and Chris Bathgate, while the Meatmen will represent East Lansing. — Staff writer Gary Graff
