Carrie Newcomer Revels In Her "Strongest Work" Yet

Born and raised in Dowagiac in southwestern Michigan and now residing in Bloomington, Ind., singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer still considers herself “a nice little Midwestern lady at heart. I am the person who brings the casserole when someone’s sick — and I’m cool with that.”

Her “day job” doesn’t leave Newcomer, 48, much time for cooking, however.

She’s released seven solo albums since leaving the group Stone Soup in the late ‘80s. She considers her latest, “The Geography of Light,” “the strongest work I’ve ever come out with” and says that the widely varied 14 tracks “come from a pretty deep place,” including songs written in collaboration with authors such as Parker J. Palmer and Scott Russell Sanders.

“One of the running themes in this album is, ‘What are the good questions, and where do we find meaning in our lives?’ ” says Newcomer, who’s also working on a musical called “Bad Dates” with the Indiana Repertory Theatre. “I just don’t think there’s a lot of easy, black and white answers out there, but I do think there’s a lot of good questions. And I think we answer them and they come back and we answer them again and then we answer them to the best of our abilities.

“Some things just stay mysteries, I think. The songs, for me, are the process of asking the questions, and I think the process is the answer for me. I don’t usually venture to try to give any answers.”

Carrie Newcomer and Colin O’Brien & the MadWaukee Stompers perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday (March 5th) at the Ark, 316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $17.50. Call (734) 761-1451 or visit www.theark.org.
