Diana Jones Slowly Winning An Audience

Of the Oakland Press

Nashville singer-songwriter Diana Jones has noticed a “slow burn” trend since the release of her critically acclaimed 2006 album “My Remembrance of You.”

“It’s just sort of taken on a life of its own,” says the New Yorkraised Jones, 42, who released “My Remembrance ...” eight years after its predecessor and after engaging in a “soul-searching” period following the death of her grandfather.

“People have sort of caught on and heard of (the album) and heard of me. The gigs kept coming in, and I just keep playing. It’s working out well.”

So well, in fact, that Jones is negotiating with “a couple” of record companies to put out her next album, “Better Times Will Come,” which she’s been working on for the past two weeks in Nashville and Connecticut, and plans to have ready for release in June. The title, she says, speaks to the set’s more optimistic tone, though it does include a track called “The Day I Die” — which, according to Jones, looks optimistically forward “at all the things that will go on after that, which kind of cheered me up.”

“We cut all the (basic) tracks in two days live in Connecticut,” Jones says. “It was a lot of fun to do it that way. I remember a very wise person once told me to just tell the story, so that’s what I tried to do.

“I had just come back from Europe with a cold ... and had to go into the studio when I had this cold in my head. But you can’t hear it on the record — the miracle of Sudafed, I guess.

Diana Jones and the Milroys perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 15) at the Old Town Hall, 480 Mill St., Ortonville. Admission is $15 at the door; children 12 and under are free. Call (248) 394-0113.
