Interview:
Against Me! Not Against Taking Punk To The Mainstream

Florida's Against Me! courted the ire of the punk rock community this year by signing with a major label. "There's definitely some naysayers that want to strip us of our punk credibility and our entitlement go call ourselves punk," says drummer Warren Oakes.

"Which is fine."

The trade-off, of course, is the quartet is able to reach a much larger audience with its fourth album, "New Wave," and Oakes, 26, says the band is seeing the results of that already at its shows.

"We've definitely got people coming out that have never seen us play before," he notes. "Even though we're a band that's been around 10 years, a lot of people still come up and say, 'Is this your first time coming through?' We've just popped onto their radar, so we've got this newfound rookie status.

"And we get calls from relatives on a pretty regular basis 'cause they've just heard us on the radio. So we're fully validated in the eyes of our grandparents now, too."

Against Me! Sage Francis, World Inferno Friendship Society and Cobra Skulls perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 20) at Clutch Cargo's, 65 E. Huron St., Pontiac. Tickets are $16. Call (248) 333-2362 or visit www.clutchcargos.com.
