Aging

The members: Aging in a Place of Madness is vocalist/ guitarist Nick Wilson, Phil Roberts (guitar/ vocals), Phil Stranyak (bass), all of Brownstown Township, and drummer Chris Smith from Flat Rock.

The history: Formed in fall, 2004, the foursome originally met at Carlson High School, playing together a few times for fun. For the next couple years, the group would jam together on and off between Roberts and Smith’s other band, Never Give In, and Roberts and Stranyak’s new project, Blanket Fort, eventually playing its first show last fall for a Hurricane Katrina benefit in Southgate.

What's up with the name: “We tossed around a bunch of names; most didn’t seem to fit us as well as Aging in a Place of Madness did,” said Smith. “We came up with it because of recent tragedy, and the torment that a lot of kids have to go through.

“We just see that this planet has been going down the drain for a long time, and if we can do something to fix it, we’re going to.”

The style: Aging’s members cite Green Day, Deftones, Nirvana and The Bouncing Souls as not just inspirations, but the reasons why they started playing music.

“We’re not trying to rip from their music, but it’s the best way to describe each of our styles of playing,” Smith said. “We’re not trying to sound like anyone, but we are trying to write faster, more punk-influenced music than anything else.”

Got anything recorded? The group has demo tracks that are available through its My Space site, found at www.myspace.com/aginginaplaceofmadness, and is currently working on a full-length disc for release later this year.

“We have been tossing around ideas of doing concept albums, also — not to mention remix demos,” said Smith.

Tell us your future? Smith says the band’s goal is to get out of Michigan and tour the world.

“We hope to get onto a label that will help us out financially,” he added. “We just need a way of playing our music as our lifestyle, not just a hobby.

“That’s what we’re going to work towards.”
